Keep in mind that it takes time for hair to grow. You will not notice results immediately as it takes time to restore follicle health and then for the new strands of hair to grow. We recommend you take pictures of your scalp before you begin treatment so you can effectively keep track of results.
0–3 Months: The first thing you may or may not notice is an increase in shedding. If this is the case, don’t worry. Initial hair shedding is actually a sign that the treatment is working – indicating that new anagen hairs are pushing out the older hairs to make way for healthy new shaft of hair. Some itchiness might be experienced at this point in the process as the arrector pili muscles linked to the follicle contracts.
3–6 Months: Next, you will begin to notice a decrease in hair loss. After the first few weeks of using your device according to the instructions, you will notice that hair is not shedding as much as previously. Do not be discouraged if you don’t see significant change. Keep in mind that preventing progression of hair loss is in itself a success. You may notice that your hair is slightly fuller in the areas that you had noticed thinning.
12 Months: This is the time to evaluate the results of laser therapy. We recommend you take another set of pictures and compare to those you took at the beginning.
24 Months +: This is when you should see the greatest and most impactful results. Expect to see the most you can get from Capillus laser therapy at this point. For as long as you continue to comply with laser therapy, you should maintain a fuller head of hair and reduction of hair loss.
The CapillusPro™ is intended to treat Androgenetic Alopecia and promote hair growth in males who have Norwood Hamilton Classifications of IIa-V patterns of hair loss, and to treat Androgenetic Alopecia and promote hair growth in females with who have Ludwig (Savin) scale Classifications I-1 to I-4, II-1, or frontal patterns of hair loss; both with Fitzpatrick Skin Types I to IV.

LOW LEVEL LASER THERAPY (LLLT)

Low level laser therapy (also known as red light therapy, cold laser, soft laser, bio-stimulation and photobiomodulation) is a safe form of light treatment used for a variety of health indications and is used to treat genetic forms of hair loss, common in men and women and some types of alopecia, and simply to promote hair growth and increase hair thickness.

The current topically applied treatment standard for pattern balding, and alopecia areata, is minoxidil.  However, current research shows that best results can be achieved with multiple, or adjuvant, therapies and low level laser therapy is for hair loss is promoted as a safe alternative or additional treatment.

It effectively stops hair loss in approx. 85% of users. It actively increases thickness of individual hairs by up to 25% and it accelerates blood circulation and cellular growth. The procedure is painless as the therapy is dominated by light. The laser generates cold light to achieve reduction of hair loss and increase in hair growth.

What is a ‘cold laser’?

Cold laser uses healing laser light to stimulate biological processes below the skin’s surface.  The infrared of the cold laser has a stimulatory effect on tissues by increasing cellular energy.  It generates a ‘cold’ laser energy which does not cause thermal change in the skin tissue.  This approach stimulates the natural processes rather than resurfacing the skin through skin cell destruction.  Hot lasers are used primarily in the medical field because of their ability to cause thermal changes which poses a hazard and can destroy skin tissue.  By contrast, cold laser is safe, even if used for long periods of time.  Long-term exposure to this laser could lead to damage to your eyesight but this risk can be avoided by wearing eye protection during your treatment under the laser.  There are no known other harmful side effects from this type of therapy.

The benefits of Low Level Laser Therapy

Much more is known about the effects of laser light on biochemical and cellular function:

  • Increases cellular energy by up to 150% (Adenosine Triphosphate production)
  • Stimulates cell repair and proliferation.
  • Increases reproduction of hair and skin cells
  • Helps the activation of dormant hair follicles
  • Upregulates growth factors and stimulates anagen hairs
  • Has an anti-inflammatory effect. (Hair bulbs are known to be inflamed in male and female pattern hair loss)
  • Enhances microcirculation of capillary blood vessels.
  • Has an analgesic effect ie it relieves pain and irritation.
  • Immuno-stimulation with correction of cellular and anti-body activity.
  • Increases anti-oxidant activity in the blood.
  • Stabilises oxidative degradation of lipids.
  • Stimulates blood cell renewal
  • Increases wound healing time
  • Increases vasodilation

Genetic Hair Loss in Men and Women

Genetic hair loss can affect up to 70% of men (male pattern hair loss) and 40% of women (female pattern hair loss) at some point in their lifetime. While men typically present with a distinctive pattern involving hairline recession and vertex balding, women normally exhibit a diffuse hair thinning over the top of their scalps.

Who are the best candidates for low level laser therapy for hair loss?
Low level laser therapy is intended for men and women with thinning hair or pattern baldness caused by a hereditary condition.  Alopecia areata typically responds well to low level laser therapy too.

What is the clinical evidence to show laser hair therapy is effective?
Scientific research has shown that low level laser therapy can provide benefit for some men and women suffering from genetic type of hair loss, also some alopecias. Whether this treatment is suitable in your particular case is determined at consultation.  Peer reviewed scientific papers and medical research articles are available for you to view.  Please contact us if you would like to see these.

Benefits of laser therapy for hair loss

  • Low level laser therapy can be used in both men and women
  • No adverse effects have been reported
  • It is a clean and painless procedure.
  • The therapy is dominated by light.  The laser generates cold light to achieve reduction of hair loss and increase hair growth.
  • Low level laser hair therapy is relatively inexpensive when compared to the costs of hair transplantation
  • It requires minimal time commitment
  • Hair growth may occur on the top of the head/crown and along the hairline of forehead.  Improvement has been reported in some users after 12 to 26 weeks of use, with reduced hair fall and noticeable hair growth.  Most users will see benefits after 26 weeks to 52 weeks of continued use.

Who cannot use low level laser therapy?

Although there are very few side effects of note with low level laser therapy there are a few contraindications which make it unadvisable to treat with low level lasers.  These conditions are:

  • Epilepsy
  • A pace maker
  • Pregnancy/lactation
  • Active skin cancer
  • Hypersensitivity to light
