What is Trichology?

A trichologist is a specialist in all hair and scalp conditions.  Your hair is a good reflection of what nutrients you have been absorbing and the general health of your body at any given time, if you are ill, this will reflect in the condition, length, density and strength of your hair, similarly if you are stressed or not absorbing nutrients, a trichologist can determine all of this just by looking at your hair and will investigate the cause. Hair loss for example has over 1000 possible causes, and a trichologist is trained in all of these and has the resources to diagnose and treat them.

Hair loss is not the only reason that someone would see a trichologist, there are many scalp conditions that can be diagnosed and treated by a trichologist such as eczema, seborrheic dermatitis folliculitis; just to name a few.

Trichologists are very thorough and persistent with their investigation. Sometimes, and as a direct result of exploration into the cause of the presenting problem, a trichologist will discover that the symptoms are actually secondary and that the primary cause is due to a different condition altogether that would have otherwise gone undiagnosed. Trichologists will work closely with the GP in this instance in order to treat the patient effectively.

Hair loss can affect people of all stages of life, male, female, young and old and there are various reasons for this, therefore there is no one size fits all solution, which is why seeing a trichologist is paramount to success when it comes to treatment. New cutting-edge diagnostic tools such as genetic testing and trichoscopy helps the trichologist to diagnose and treat conditions effectively without the need for invasive measures.
