How to stop hair breakage

Hair breakage is something all of us deal with, but are you causing your hair to break? Here are a few causes and tips to keep your hair healthy.

Diet

Yes, I know what you’re thinking… How can diet stop my hair from breaking? but you are what you eat, your hair health is directly impacted by your diet, Trichologists can actually tell how good your diet is by looking at your hair under a Trichoscope, so the healthier the hair the stronger it will be. Eat lots of protein rich foods and make sure you’re eating enough; we need at least 1300 calories per day to sustain hair growth!

Heat

Although heat is a must have in our beauty regimes, we must ensure we’re doing it safely. Most of us style our hair after washing it, but it is so important to make sure our hair is completely dry before applying straighteners or curling tongs. Water boils at 100 degrees and we are applying tools that can heat up to over 300 degrees. If there is any moisture left inside that strand of hair it will boil instantly, expand and break the hair. So, if you must use high heat, make sure you apply heat protection and dry your hair thoroughly on a cool heat beforehand.

Do you towel dry?  Do you brush your wet hair?

Your hair is at it’s most vulnerable while its wet (it can stretch more than 50% it’s length when wet in contrast to 20% while dry) so rubbing your hair with a towel just after your shower is a big “No No”, instead pop it up in a towel to slowly absorb the excess water, also try and leave brushing until your hair is dry, run your fingers through to gently detangle but leave the brushing until after.

Hair bobbles/ties.

Hair bobbles don’t just cause breakage, The tension they cause can make your hair fall out.

Traction alopecia is caused by tension so try and limit your ‘up do’s’ to a couple of times a week only.  Keep your hair loose as much as you can. Silk scrunchies are also fantastic if you do want to keep your hair up occasionally as they don’t pull at the hair.

Regular trimming

Trimming your hair regularly ensures that you stop those split ends from travelling up the shaft of the hair and causing breakage.

Breakage can be annoying but remember that in most cases it is treatable by just putting into place good hair care solutions.

If you seem to have tried everything and are still experiencing hair breakage after making changes to your diet and routine, there may be some other underlying problem, but not to worry, that’s why us Trichologists are here to help.
